A team of some 80 artists in Poland have been working a new film about the life of Vincent van Gogh, based entirely on his art, broadcaster RTL news says on Thursday.

The film, Loving Vincent, is made up of over 63,000 paintings, based on known works by Van Gogh and created in his style.

The scenes were first recorded using actors. Each shot was then projected onto canvas and painted over, then digitalised to create an animated oil painting. Each second of the film required 12 paintings, RTL says.

Loving Vincent features over 120 of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings and the plot is drawn from the 800 letters written by the painter himself, film company BreakThru films says on its website.

The first trailers for the film were released in February to critical acclaim. The project is the subject of a special documentary which will be broadcast on RTL on Thursday evening.
