A homeless Polish man who was drunk and told police he was a terrorist was behind Tuesday night’s security scare at Schiphol airport.

The 25-year-old man, who was carrying two large rucksacks, was arrested after a military police dog indicated they may contain explosives, according to a police statement.

The police were tipped off by passersby who reported seeing the man acting suspiciously. Security at Schiphol has been stepped up following the Brussels bombings.

Parts of the airport were closed for over four hours while police made sure there was no security risk. The man remains in custody, police said, and the case has been handed over to the public prosecution department who will decide what further action to take.
