Mega bonus for Schiphol boss: airport security under pressure

Main Entrance in Schiphol Airport- AmsterdamAmsterdam Schiphol airport’s chief executive Jos Nijhuis received a bonus of €369,716 in 2014, the Telegraaf reports on Tuesday.

Together with his salary of €389,039 and pension payments, the bonus brought Nijhuis’ total earnings for 2014 to €900,000, a sum agreed by finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the paper says.

Although this breaks government guidelines on public sector pay,  there was no protest from the airport’s shareholders, the Dutch state and the councils of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, according to the Telegraaf.

Meanwhile, the FNV union is warning for long delays this summer and gaps in security at the airport because of a shortage of security guards.

‘Schiphol wants 20% fewer security guards and is putting out contracts to tender,’ the FNV’s Marianne Jekkers told the Telegraaf. ‘That is impossible and dangerous.’
