Injured midfielder Nigel de Jong out of rest of World Cup

Midfielder Nigel de Jong is to miss the rest of the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign due to a groin injury picked up in Oranje’s crucial game against Mexico.

De Jong, a key member of coach Louis van Gaal’s team, will be out for two to four weeks, after leaving the pitch nine minutes into Sunday’s game.

A post on the Dutch football association’s Twitter account said: ‘Nigel de Jong has a tear in his groin muscle. He’s probably out for two to four weeks. De Jong continues rehabilitation with Oranje.’

Van Gaal described the loss of De Jong as a ‘very serious blow’.

The Netherlands take on Costa Rica in the quarter finals on Saturday.
