The Netherlands should do more to stop racism: Council of Europe

The Netherlands needs to do more to tackle racism in Dutch society and should draw up a national strategy to combat racial discrimination, according a Council of Europe commission.

While there has been progress since the last report on the Netherlands, there is still cause for concern, the organisation’s commission on racism and intolerance (ECRI) is quoted as saying by website nu.nl.

The Council of Europe has 47 member countries and focuses on developing human rights and democracy.

In particular, the Netherlands should work to stop the exploitation of temporary workers who do not live in the Netherlands, such as Polish nationals who work in farming, the report is quoted as saying.

It also criticised the way some politicians and the media describe Muslims and Eastern Europeans as a threat to Dutch society.
