Cabinet plans extra energy tax to ensure we meet climate targets

Energy bills are set to go up again next year as the government introduces a new tax to help ensure the Netherlands meets climate change targets, RTL news reports.

The cabinet has a 2020 target which states 16% of the energy used in the Netherlands by that date should be from sustainable sources. At the moment the figure is around 4%, the Financieele Dagblad said last month.
To boost the success chances, the government is introducing a new subsidy scheme, which will be funded by the extra tax.
Half of the money will come from consumers and the rest from energy companies. The money will go towards new green energy schemes, such as the development of wind turbines.
Next year every household will pay €8 towards the scheme. In 2014 this will rise to €19 and it will go up again in subsequent years, RTL says.
