New dementia home takes residents back to childhood

A new nursing home for people with severe dementia in Rotterdam will divide up the residents along ethic lines, the AD reports on Tuesday.

The home, owned by healthcare group Laurens, will have five smaller units, where eight residents will have their own rooms and a shared living area.
What makes this home special is that each unit will reflect the culture of its residents. For example, Turkish patients will live together, as will Moroccans. ‘Not only will furnishings like floor coverings reflect their country of origin, but so will the staff and food,’ the paper said.
The changes are necessary because people with dementia tend to ‘return’ to childhood and forget later memories. The new home will open in April.
Another Dutch residential home for people with dementia, which takes the form of a village, has generated significant interest abroad.
