The installation of camera surveillance has little effect on preventing crime and vandalism, according to research by the police training institute Politieacademie.
In particular, experienced criminals are skilled at getting around security cameras and this lessens their effectiveness, the research shows. The report is based on interviews with 42 convicted criminals and at-risk youngsters.
Nevertheless, cameras are useful in alerting officials to risky situations and in collecting evidence, the researchers said.
