Cost cuttings, more gamblers boosts Holland Casino earnings

State-owned casino group Holland Casino booked a profit in 2011 after two loss-making years, chief executive Dick Flink told the Financieele Dagblad on Thursday evening, without giving details.

The turn-around follows cost cutting measures and higher visitor numbers in the revamped Amsterdam and Rotterdam casinos, Flink said. He was speaking at the reopening of the Scheveningen casino which was closed for one year for renovations.
The company, which is the only licenced casino operator in the country, was hit hard by the smoking ban, higher taxes on gambling and the economic downturn. It currently operates 14 casinos and others will also be updated, Flink told the paper.
Last year, the government said it was looking seriously at selling the group.
