A shortage of volunteers to organise the traditional Queen’s Day party in the Betuwe village of Lieden led 200 Polish volunteers to step into the breach, the Volkskrant reports on Friday.

The village, with 6,000 inhabitants, could not raise enough volunteers to help decorate the area between its two pubs – including inflating 800 balloons and building an obstacle course.
Paul van Driel, of the local Orange society, raised the problem with a staffing agency and dozens of Polish workers volunteered to help out, the paper says. Hundreds of Poles work on fruit farms in the region.
