Ministers to appeal against court’s Turkish visa ruling

Immigration minister Gerd Leers and foreign minister Uri Rosenthal are to appeal against a court decision giving Turkish nationals the right to work in the Netherlands without a visa.

On Monday, a court in Haarlem said a Turkish businessman who was arrested in 2009 after returning to the Netherlands from a short stay in Turkey without a visa should not have been detained.
The treaty was signed in 1973 and states that the rights of Turkish nationals to free movement within the EU should not be curbed.
Rosenthal said in January that because there was a visa requirement for Turkish nationals in 1973, this is still the case.
