Social networker fined for sending spam

The telecoms sector watchdog Opta has fined an un-named person for sending unwanted messages to thousands of people using the Hyves social networking site, Nos tv reports.

The spammer has been fined €12,000 for using an anonymous users profile to send ‘invitations’ to join an online game. Opta had 1,300 complaints about the message.
Hyves cofounder Raymond Spanjar told Nos he was ‘very happy’ with the Opta ruling. The ‘trusted’ surroundings of an online social networking site are being ‘threatened by spammers’ he said.
Sending spam has been totally banned in the Netherlands since October 1. ‘If you get an unasked-for message via a social networking site, that too can be spam,’ Opta chairman Chris Fonteijn told Nos.
