Minister visits scene of Delft University fire

The fire at Delft University’s faculty of architecture is the biggest disaster in the history of Dutch university education, education minister Ronald Plasterk said on Wednesday, news agency ANP reported.

Plasterk was speaking during a meeting students and officials after visiting the burned-out shell of the 13-storey building.
The fire will not affect either classes or exams, dean of the faculty Wytze Patijn told students. He called on the department’s 3,000 students to work at home as much as possible.
Companies and other institutions close to the university have also offered emergency accommodation, the AD reported.
Meanwhile, it has emerged that fire fighters were able to save some of the historic models and furniture, including chairs by Gerrit Rietveld and Le Corbusier, which formed part of the faculty’s unique collection.
