Pin-up

Does the modern soldier want a ‘sex bomb with brains’ asks the Volksrant on its front page on Friday, referring to the ‘political pin-up’ hanging at the Dutch military base in Uruzgan.

The lady in question is none other than GroenLinks party leader Femke Halsema, a 41-year-old mother of two who, as the paper kindly points out, ‘has nevertheless not yet lost her youthful elegance’.
It goes on to say that Halsema, in Afghanistan as part of a foreign affairs committee delegation, stepped out of the Hercules transport plane in ‘Jackie Kennedy glasses and patent leather jacket’.
Although the Volkskrant mentioned that she is planning to vote against extending the Dutch mission, there was much more relish in reporting her reaction to the pin-up picture. ‘With her eyes full of surprise, the Volkskrant reports that Halsema pointed vaguely at the big breasts with hearts on the nipples and said ‘that’s really too flattering’.’
