Benefit reform amended after Christian Democrat row
Local councils will be able to pay extra money to people hard hit by the new welfare benefit reforms, says Trouw on Friday.
The amendment comes after a blazing row between Christian Democrat MPs during a meeting on Thursday evening. Four MPs threatened to vote against the reforms when they are put before parliament.
The MPs are particularly worried that the income of adult children will be lumped in with that of adults if welfare benefits are calculated on a household rather than an individual basis, reports Trouw.
This would make children and adults financially dependent on each other, making it difficult for families to get out of poverty, say the MPs.
Party chairman Sybrand van Haersma Buma contacted junior social affairs minister Paul de Krom of the liberal VVD and sounded him out. However, he would not change his reforms.
Eventually it was necessary to contact prime minister Mark Rutte who agreed to amend the plans.
