MPs back change to gun laws
A majority of MPs support recommendations from the public security council which say people should have to prove they are psychologically healthy before they can get a gun licence.
The council made the recommendation in a report on the gun laws published on Thursday. The report followed April’s supermarket shooting by a young man with a history of psychiatric problems and a licence to own five guns.
At the moment, the police can reject licence applications if the would-be gun owner is not fit. The change would place the onus on gun owners to prove they are mentally stable.
Gun crime
The security council also called for better registration of the number of weapons in circulation in the Netherlands and whether or not they have been used in crimes. The council’s own research shows at least 21 people have been killed by licenced weapons over the past 10 years.
The Dutch gun club association also supports tighter checks on gun licence owners and has introduced a tip line for possible problem cases.
The Netherlands has 781 gun clubs with a total 42,290 members.
