EU farm subsidies go to Schiphol and skating club

A football club, an ice skating club and Schiphol airport were given money from the European Union’s €55bn farm subsidy scheme last year, the AD reports on Friday.

Amateur football club Sintboys-DES from Sint Maarten got €354,567 cash to rebuild a club house into a multifunctional sports centre and ice club Ons Genoegen in Gramsbergen was able to build an inline skate track thanks to a grant of €162,444, the paper says.
A spokesman for the Commission said the subsidies had been allocated ‘100%’ according to the rules. The farm subsidy scheme also includes money to foster rural life and improve community facilities.
Schiphol Airport received dozens of subsidies, most of which went to its catering service. But the payouts also included €155,195 for voluntarily leaving farmland to go fallow, according to website Farmsubsidy.org.
