Hilversum child abuse suspects attempts suicide, is hospitalised

The 27-year-old man suspected of sexually abusing at least two girls at an after-school club in De Bilt near Hilversum has attempted to commit suicide while being held in custody, the public prosecution department said in a short statement.

He was found in his cell and taken to hospital for treatment, the department said, giving no further details.

The man has been remanded in custody until August 31 and judges will decide then if he should be held for longer.

Earlier this week the department said more complaints – but fewer than five – had been made against the man, who was arrested last week when two sisters reported they had been sexually abused by him.

Police said at the time they did not have any indications that the suspect, who had an official certificate of good behaviour, had offended before. Now, however, ‘more parents’ have come forward saying their children may also have been abused, the public prosecution department said.
