Judges in Den Bosch have jailed a 26-year-old man for 15 years for his role in a violent burglary in 2014, during which an 86-year-old widow died.

Rizwan V was found guilty of killing Mien Graveland during a robbery at her home in Helmond. His accomplices Henk van D and Jacky W were jailed for eight and six years respectively for their roles in the crime.

The court was told how V pretended to work for an energy company to gain entrance to her home. He then hit her over the head with a torch and tied her to a table leg using tie wraps.

She was found several hours later by her children but died of her injuries in hospital.

Sentencing the trio, the court said it had been a ‘gruesome, ruthless crime.’ The public prosecution department had called for jail terms of 22 to 12 years.
