The front door of right-wing politician Thierry Baudet’s Amsterdam home was only attacked once by activists, not twice as claimed, police have confirmed to the NRC.

Baudet had reported that a ‘foul-smelling liquid’ was sprayed under the front door of his home on Monday morning, just days after feminist protesters daubed an anarchist symbol on his door in pink paint.

However, the liquid later transpired to be the remains of the cleaning fluid used to remove the paint, police said. Soap which had first been used to clean off the paint had masked the smell of the other cleaner.

News of the second incident led to an increase in security at Baudet’s home, including camera and police surveillance.

The perpetrator of the pink paint attack is still unknown, but the Radical Anarchist Feminist Front, which claimed responsibility for the first incident, said it was protesting against Baudet’s ‘deplorable ideas’.

Baudet, leader of the party Forum voor Democratie, has come under fire in the past for stating that women are less ambitious and like to be ‘overpowered’.

Leaders of other parties said attacking a politician’s home went beyond the boundaries of acceptable public debate. ‘However much I disagree with him, he has just as much freedom as I have to say what he wants,’ said ChristenUnie leader Gert-Jan Segers.
