International ocean container transhipment was brought to a halt on Monday when a Chinese-flagged container ship ran aground in the Dutch part of the Westerschelde estuary.

It took 15 tugs the better part of the evening to move the CSCL Jupiter which was blocking access to the Belgian port of Antwerp, the Financieele Dagblad said on Tuesday.

The 366-metre-long vessel had just left the inland port bound for the northern German port of Hamburg when its engine room reported loss of control over steering and it ran aground. About 18 other large container ships were trapped in Antwerp port, Europe’s second-largest container port, as a result.

This was the second major problem related to container ships in northen Europe. In July, two Rotterdam terminals belonging to the Danish APM group were hit by computer hackers, putting them out of action for days. Rotterdam is Europe’s largest container port.
