At least 18 people were arrested in Rotterdam on Sunday following the ‘classic’ match between arch rivals Feyenoord and Ajax.

Ajax won the match 2-1, narrowing the gap between the two clubs at the top of the Eredivisie to just three points. The scoring was opened by Lasse Schone in the first minute after he put away a 40 metre free-kick.

There are six games still to play before the end of the season.

The arrests were made for threatening behaviour, vandalism and throwing fireworks, police said. Riot police, a water canon and police on horseback were brought in to control the crowd, many of whom had gathered in the centre of the city to watch the game.
