Medical specialists protest about pensions cash with ‘Sunday’ service

Dutch medical specialists are protesting about pensions cash by offering only a skeletal service on Tuesday, reports NOS.

About 2,500 cardiologists, paediatricians, anaesthesiologists, surgeons and other specialists at 47 hospitals and medical centres are working just a ‘Sunday service’, moving appointments that had been scheduled for Tuesday.

Doctors in intensive care and accident and emergency wards are working normally, so emergency operations will not be affected.

They are demanding that money which previously went into their pension funds should be paid to them fully in cash.

Since the beginning of 2015, there have been no tax discounts for salary above €100,000 a year that goes into a pension pot.

‘In other sectors, such as the government and university hospitals, employees just get this money,’ said Leon Winkel, paediatrician and director of the Federation of Medical Specialists. ‘People at general hospitals also want what we deserve. This Sunday service is the strongest form of action that we can take…stronger campaigning is at the patient’s expense, and we don’t want that.’
