No Feyenoord fans charged with damaging Rome fountain

barcaccia fountainPolice and justice ministry officials have failed to identify which Feyenoord supporters were responsible for damaging a fountain in the centre of Rome in the run up to a Europa League football match earlier this year.

In total, 44 Feyenoord supporters aged 17 to 41 face charges in connection with the riots. But none will be charged with damaging the Barcaccia fountain because of a lack of evidence and camera footage, news agency ANP said.

Experts said at the time it had been hit by over 100 beer bottles and put the damage at over €1m.

The 44 face charges of attacking the Italian police. One 21-year-old man from Zierikzee is also charged with attempted murder. He is suspected of having thrown a mortar bomb at a police officer.

Today’s hearing was a procedural session and the main trial will take place at the end of November.
