The Netherlands to stage 2018 world allround speed skating championships

Olympic stadiumThe international skating union ISU has awarded the 2018 allround speed skating championships to the Netherlands.

The location for the event has not yet been agreed but the Dutch skating association KNSB is keen to use the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam and is looking at the options.

However, the 2018 World title event will take place on March 10 and 11 and the weather could be an issue, ISU officials have said.

An artificial rink was set up at the stadium in February 2014 and was used to stage the Dutch allround and sprint championships. The stadium was built in 1928 to host the summer Olympics and is still used for athletics, football and pop concerts.

The last open air allround championships were staged in 2001 in Budapest when Rintje Ritsma won the title.
