Many young Dutch women don’t want to work full time

Business group at the officeMany young women are opting to work part time, even if they don’t have children, the Telegraaf reports on Tuesday.

It cites a report from the national statistics office CBS which says only 37% of young women aged 15 to 27 have a full-time job, compared with 71% of young men.

In total, 8.7% of young women work between 12 and 20 hours a week, compared with just 4.7% of men.

The paper quotes new graduate Juliette, 22, who works three days a week as a recruiter. ‘I like working part-time,’ she says. ‘I have lots of free time. I would not mind doing something else on the other days… but I don’t want to work full-time. Few people in my circle do.’

Nevertheless, the Telegraaf says, there are also young women who would like to work more days but can’t find the right job. And some companies have reduced their standard working week to four days, the paper says.
