Martinair scraps 330 jobs, including 110 pilots

Air cargo company Martinair is scrapping 330 jobs, including those of 110 pilots, the company announced on Monday evening.

Of those, 170 will be ground staff in the Netherlands, 50 overseas staff and 110 pilots.

The cargo division of Air France-KLM said at a press conference on Monday evening it would try and find work for ground staff within the company but that moving pilots to Air France-KLM would be more difficult.

‘Moving them under the same conditions to KLM would cost between €10m and €15m more than forced redundancy,’ KLM operations director René de Groot said.

Martinair Cargo has made a loss of €8m per plane per year over the past three years. The current fleet of 10 planes situated in Amsterdam will be reduced three and one reserve plane by June 2016.

This will leave the company with four cargo planes in Amsterdam and two based in Paris. Martinair, part of Air France-KLM since 2008, also flies 15 B747 combi planes which can carry either cargo or passengers.
