European parliament plans trip to discuss Dutch tax treaties

European Union flags fly in front of the European Commission headquarters in BrusselsThe European parliament is sending a delegation to the Netherlands in February to look into tax agreements made by the tax office with international companies such as Starbucks, news agency ANP says on Wednesday.

The MEPs hope to meet ministers, MPs and experts, ANP says.

‘The contacts must clarify how the tax agreements are put together,’ one source told the news agency. ‘They want to speak to everyone who has something interesting to say about the question.’

The delegation will also visit Ireland and Luxemburg which, like the Netherlands, are at the centre of unfair competition allegations.

The European Commission is currently investigating the Dutch agreement with Starbucks, the Irish deal with Apple, and Fiat and Amazon in Luxemburg. Brussels is also preparing measures to combat tax avoidance within the EU.

Also on Wednesday, the  Commission said it has enlarged its enquiry into the tax ruling practice under EU state aid rules to cover all countries, not just six as earlier planned.
