A 24-year-old man earlier found not guilty of helping to steal a rare and valuable religious artifact from the Catharijn convent museum in Utrecht has been jailed for two years on appeal.

The man, named as Tim K, was cleared of involvement in the theft of the monstrance – an ornate medieval vessel used in Catholic churches to display communion wafers – last year.  Three other men were jailed for 3.5 years and three years.

K’s conviction is based in part on DNA evidence found on the moped used as a getaway vehicle.

Part of the monstrance, which was made of gilded silver and encrusted with diamonds and said to be worth €250,000, is still missing.
