Dutch set to spend more on Sinterklaas festivities this year

sinterklaas presentsThe Dutch are expected to be more generous for Sinterklaas than last year, with shops on target to book some 4.5% more in turnover, according to research by Q&A Research and Consultancy on Tuesday.

The number of people celebrating the annual Dutch festivity remains around 60% but each household is expected to spend more. Toys, sweets and books are particularly popular, and most shopping will be done in the week before December 5, the researchers say.

The research shows that much of the increase in spending is caused by the discussion around Sinterklaas’ companion Zwarte Piet. Many of those questioned said Sinterklaas is less fun because of the arguments, but they want to demonstrate their support for the tradition.

The number of purchases on internet is expected to remain the same as last year at 57%, while the use of smart phones as a retail aid is expected to increase from 3% to 7%.
