Amazon goes Dutch, but only with e-books

American online bookstore Amazon launched a Dutch language website on Wednesday but will only sell e-books – for the time being at least.

According to broadcaster Nos, Dutch publishers had been ‘dreading’ the arrival of Amazon in the Netherlands because of its tough stance in negotiations and the low payments it makes. The company says it has made agreements with the biggest publishers but agreement with others may still take some time.

‘There are publishers who don’t want to sell via Amazon,’ said spokesman Jorrit van der Meulen. ‘But we aim to have every book in the world in our collection.’

Van der Meulen declined to say if Amazon would sell other products through its Dutch webshop.

E-books do not fall under Dutch book pricing agreements, making it more attractive for Amazon to launch in the Netherlands. The company has kicked off its Dutch sales with a ‘Sinterklaas promotion’ and discounts of up to 70%.
