Fire in Schilderswijk garage, cars destroyed, no one hurt

A fire in an underground parking garage in the Schilderswijk district of The Hague on Saturday night destroyed two cars and damaged others but no one was hurt.

The fire was discovered when an inhabitant of the Brueghelstraat saw smoke coming from a meter cupboard and called the fire service.

Because of the amount of smoke coming from the parking garage, the inhabitants of the building were evacuated.

It took 42 firemen an hour to put out the blaze, when most of those evacuated were allowed to return home.

The Schilderswijk has been in the news recently following riots last weekend and the announcement of a ban on demonstrations in the district by The Hague mayor Jozias van Aartsen on Friday.
