Extend tax-free gift scheme: estate agents

The estate agents’ organisation NVM is calling for an extension to the temporary measure allowing people to give €100,000 tax free to their children.

Parents have always been able to give their children €50,000 tax free to put towards buying a house. However, the amount was raised to €100,000 last October in an effort to get the housing market moving again.

The scheme is due to expire at the end of this year.

‘The scheme is such a success it would be stupid to stop then,’ the NVM’s Roland Kimman told broadcaster Nos. ‘We can use all the help we can get.’

50,000

When the scheme was introduced, junior finance minister Eric Wiebes expected 20,000 parents to take advantage. However, by the end of June, 50,000 parents had done so.

The NVM is not the only organisation calling for an extension. The organisation for small and medium-sized companies MKB Nederland and the employers’ organisation VNO-NCW also want the scheme extended.

Budget negotiations are due to begin in The Hague next week.
