The Dutch to take fewer holidays this year

The Dutch will take fewer holidays this year with the number of bookings down 1%, according to the ING Economic Bureau.

It is the second successive year that bookings have fallen. In 2013 they were down 3%.

On average, the Dutch go on holiday 2.1 times a year, with just over half going abroad. Of those questioned, 25% said they have less money for a holiday this year.

Two-thirds of the Dutch arrange their own holiday, with one-third saying they do so because it is cheaper than going through a travel agency.

The ING survey also notes a rise in private rentals. Researcher Thijs Geijer told Nos television: ‘There is an increasing number of sites offering private rentals and they are becoming easier to find.’
