Service sector heads export earnings: central bank

The Netherlands earns more in exports from its service sector than it does from its industrial industry, according to a report by the Dutch central bank.

While the industrial sector accounts for 33% of exports, the service industry takes a share of 49%.

According to the Financieele Dagblad, which quotes the report, the central bank ‘makes short work’ of the previous assumption that exports are driven by industry.

Added-value

New calculations based on added-value to the economy rather than on export sales shows that the service sector is of more value to the Netherlands.

Of the other sectors, agriculture and mining are worth 15% of total exports, and energy companies 3%.
