Foodwatch takes food safety inspectorate to court over meat scandal

Lobby group Foodwatch is going to court in an effort to force food safety inspectors to reveal what has happened to a consignment of meat contaminated with horse, the NRC says on Thursday.

The NVWA says it does not know what happened to the meat, which was sold by meat processor Van Hattem Vlees for the past two years.

However, Foodwatch claims a number of clients have reported to the NVWA, so the organisation can launch a proper investigation into what happened, the paper says.

Earlier this year, Van Hattem was ordered to recall 28 million kilos of meat sold over the past two years because some consignments included horse meat and non-certified animals had been killed and sold.

‘The way the system is organised now means that consumers are not informed in cases of food fraud, even when their safety is at stake,’ campaign leader Meike Rijksen told news agency Novum.

The case will be heard in Amsterdam on Tuesday.
