EU elections: D66, VVD and PVV dominate the polls but who will win?

With one day to go to the European elections in the Netherlands, the Nos television poll of polls suggests the two liberal parties – D66 and the VVD – are in the lead with the anti-Islam PVV in third place.

However, the poll is based on national voting behaviour and turnout at a European level is traditionally lower, political scientist Tom Louwerse told the broadcaster.

If there were a general election tomorrow, the VVD and D66 would win 23 to 27 of the 150 parliamentary seats. The PVV would take 21 to 25 and the Socialists would be fourth with 18 to 22.

The poll of polls compares the results of four main opinion polls.

Anti-Europe

However, a poll for current affairs show EenVandaag on Tuesday evening has the PVV as the clear winner in the European elections, winning six of the 26 Dutch seats in the European parliament. D66, the VVD and CDA would all win four.

A TNS Nipo indicated D66 will be the biggest Dutch party in Europe after Thursday’s vote. This is because the PVV is unable to motivate people who oppose the EU to actually vote.

Five years ago, the CDA was the biggest party in the Dutch European elections.
