Hoofddorp hopes to stage Major League Baseball

Hoofddorp, the service town close to Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, is hoping to stage Major League Baseball in 2015, Nos television says on Wednesday.

This season was officially opened with a game in Australia and Hoofddorp hopes to be able to host three games next year in its new baseball stadium. The official opening ceremony takes place on Thursday.

The stadium was built according to American wishes and the league was also involved in the process, Nos says. For example, seats come fitted with a drinks holder, there is a fitness area next to the changing rooms and proper warm-up area or bullpen.

Ambition

Major League Baseball is constantly on the hunt for new markets in which to make profits, the broadcaster says. ‘The MLB wants to move into Europe,’ Maarten Broersen, chairman of the foundation running the stadium, said. ‘The three matches they will play here are the opener for that ambition.’

The MLB said informally it will play three games in the Netherlands but the agreement has not yet been finalised, Nos says.

The stadium has seating for 635 but this can be expanded to 30,000 during major events.
