Gold and silver medieval coins found under Utrecht’s Domplein

A hoard of early medieval gold and silver coins has been found during excavation work under the Domplein in central Utrecht.

The 52 gold and 12 silver coins date from the Frankish period and were found during digging for a new underground museum.

The coins are evidence that money was being minted in Utrecht around the year 700, news agency ANP reports. The royal Dutch mint is still located in the city.

The coins have been insured for €250,000 and they will go on display at the city’s Centraal Museum for three weeks from Friday, ANP says.
