Amsterdam is most unsafe Dutch city, but crime rate rises in villages

Amsterdam remains the most unsafe city in the Netherlands, with a 10% rise in burglaries and a 19% increase in armed robberies over the past year, according to the latest edition of the AD’s crime monitor.

The number of instances of pickpocketing rose by 24% in the capital over the past year, largely due to the number of tourists.

Nationwide, there has been a drop in the crime rate across all types of crime. The safest place in the Netherlands to live is the Frisian town of Littenseradeel, where there were no armed robberies or pickpocketing offences.

However, there were 15 burglaries and 12 incidents of threatening behaviour, the AD says.

And while the crime rate is going down overall, there is a shift towards more crime in the countryside, particularly burglaries and assault, the AD says.

For example, there was a rise in the number of burglaries in 29% of the country’s biggest cities but in four out of 10 villages. There were more assaults in 11% of the cities but in 36% of village, the AD says.
