‘Oegstgeest is the best place to live in the Netherlands’

The Zuid-Holland town of Oegstgeest is the best place to live in the Netherlands, scoring 8.7 out of 10 in a Telegraaf research project.

The newspaper based the score on Oegstgeest’s key quality of life indicators – house prices, crime, poverty, shops, schools and medical care.

Oegstgeest is officially a town of 23,000 people but is effectively a suburb of Leiden.

The local authority areas of Edam-Volendam and Heemstede were in second and third place.

Bottom of the list, with a score of just 2.2, was Vaals in the far south of Limburg. Vlagtwedde and Eemsmond in Groningen were second and third from bottom.

None of the big cities appear in the top 25 ranking. Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht only score well in terms of the nearest supermarket, the Telegraaf said.
