Big fines for Dutch rail firms NS and ProRail for failing to meet targets

Dutch train operator NS has been fined millions of euros by the transport ministry for failing to meet performance targets in 2012 and 2013.

The 100% state-owned company failed to meet passenger expectations about punctuality, the availability of seating and staffing in both years, junior minister Wilma Mansveld said.

The minister had earlier given NS a €2.75m preliminary fine for its failures in 2012. That has now been confirmed. In 2013, even though punctuality improved, passengers were less happy about the availability of seating. The 2013 fine of €2.75 is preliminary.

ProRail, which operates the tracks, was given a preliminary fine of €1.5m for failing to meet punctuality targets on regional and cargo train services in 2013.

If performances improve this year, the preliminary fines will be cancelled.
