Viktor & Rolf, Rineke Dijkstra join up with National Ballet

The Dutch National Ballet on Tuesday announced four world premieres in which choreographers working in the Netherlands are teaming up with four world famous Dutch artists from other disciplines.

The 81-year-old Hans van Manen is working with 24-year-old Remy van Kesteren, considered one of the world’s great harpists.

Van Manen is used to collaborating with people from outside the ballet world. As far back as 1979 he incorporated cameraman Henk van Dijk in his choreography for Live. Van Dijk followed Coleen Davis around the stage while she danced, creating a multi-media ballet.

Viktor & Rolf

The fashion designers Viktor & Rolf are working with Jorma Elo, a former leading dancer with the Nederlands Dans Theater and now a sought-after choreographer. Viktor & Rolf are not only designing the costumes for this piece but also making their first foray into set design.

Rineke Dijkstra, one of the world’s most famous photographers, is lending her talent in portraiture to a work by Ton Simons, one of the Netherlands’ most interesting choreographers.

Juanjo Arqués, a former dancer with the Dutch National Ballet and now a rising star in choreography, teams up with the prominent visual artist Krijn de Koning, whose architectural and labyrinthine constructions feature prominent colours.

The programme, under the title Dutch Doubles, is at the Muziektheater in Amsterdam in March, April and May.
