Software maker Michael Dubbelman has developed an interactive map showing speeding cars and has spotted 240,000 cases of drivers doing more than 170 kph in the past 10 days alone.
The highest speed recorded so far is 259 kph on the A50 at 04.00 on December 31. But on Thursday morning, at least one driver was spotted traveling at 243 kph north of Amsterdam.
Dubbelman constructed the website map using information from the national road traffic data bank to extract the information about speeding cars.
The information for the data bank, which has been public since last year, is gathered by 24,000 sensors in the road surfaces and is used to monitor traffic jams and road quality.
He told the AD he was shocked when he realised how many cars drive faster than 170 kph. ‘At night there are so many reports I can hardly see the map any more,’ he told the paper.
