Biggest Dutch photo award won by Mandela funeral picture

A photograph of Nelson Mandela’s funeral in December scooped the Zilveren Camera 2013 award for Dutch photographer Ilvy Njiokiktjien.

Njiokiktjien, of Chinese-Indonesian origin, won a prize for young photographic talent in 2008 and was last year appointed Fotograaf des Vaderlands – a photographic equivalent of the poet laureate.

The Canon prize for innovative photo journalism went to The Sochi Project, about the run-up to the controversial winter Olympics by Rob Hornstra and Arnold van Bruggen.

Over 10,000 photos from 548 photographers were submitted for the awards.
