Selfie is the public’s word of the year
Selfie – or self-portrait photo, usually taken by smartphone – has been voted word of the year in the 2013 Van Dale dictionary group poll.
In total 22,000 voted in the online poll, with selfie taking 32% of the vote. Second in the vote was socialbestitas, or the compulsive use of social media channels. In third place was sletvrees, or a fear among women of being seen as a slut.
Last week, the Dutch lexiconographers association Onze Taal published its own poll, in which participatiesamenleving (participation society) was voted word of the year.
