Charitable donations stabilise, small charities hard hit

The amount of money the Dutch donate to charity rose by just 0.7% last year on average, but small charities were able to raise fewer funds, according to the fund-raising institute CBF.

On average, Dutch households gave €200 to charity last year, totalling €1.4bn. However, there is a clear divide in popularity.

Charities which raise more than €2.5m in donations a year saw their income rise by 1.1% compared with 2011. But smaller good causes got 4.3% less cash from the public.

Choices

Over the past 10 years, charitable donations from legacies, gifts and collections has gone up by an average 4%. ‘People are reducing how much they give and making choices,’ a CBF spokesman told news agency ANP.

Anti-cancer charity KWF Kankerstichting remains the biggest, with €137m in donations last year. Children’s charity Unicef was second, followed by Doctors without Borders.
