Atlantic torpedo caught in Dutch waters – it’s a fish

A species of electric ray known as an Atlantic torpedo or dark electric ray has been captured by fishermen off the coast of the Netherlands.

The fish, which can grow up to a metre long and deliver an electric shock of up to 200 volts, is a ‘very rare’ find in Dutch waters, according to marine institute Ecomare.

The fish was brought in by fishermen some 25 km from Rotterdam port in September. This example was about 45 centimetres long.
