Brussels warns about impact of Dutch skilled technicians shortage

While the Netherlands continues to be among the top performers in EU competitiveness indicators, the country is likely to face challenges, according to a new European Commission report.

The latest Brussels evaluation says relatively low private R&D investments may weaken the Netherlands’ competitiveness in the future.

In addition, ‘skills shortages are emerging, especially in engineering and technology-related professions, a situation which is becoming an increasing concern and a potential barrier to growth’, the commission report states.

The Dutch government is taking steps to try to encourage more students to study technical and science subjects and is looking at ways to encourage foreign students with a science background to remain in the country.
