The Dutch football association KNVB is to experiment with a video referee in the next two playing seasons and the Jupiler league gets a make-over this season.

The video referee, or instant video replay, will be used during certain premiership games and KNVB cup matches, the Telegraaf reports.

However, the decisions made will not be passed on to the official referee because the technology still requires further development. If test results are good, the video referee will be fully introduced in future football seasons, the KNVB says.

Jupiler league

The first division Jupiler league makes a new start this weekend following the bankruptcy of SC Veendam and AGOVV earlier this year.

The league will now be made up of 20 teams rather than the previous 18. Joining the league are the youth teams of Ajax, FC Twente and PSV and the amateur players of Achilles’29, who will turn professional.

The KNVB has drawn up strict rules for the three youth teams. Players must be under 23 and may not alternate playing in the Jupiler league and the premier league, reports the Volkskrant.

Nor will the three youth teams or Achilles’29 be able to win promotion to the premier league.
